When I moved to Colorado Springs in January 2026, I was ready for a fresh start. Leaving betrayal behind gave me room to breathe and think about what I wanted my life to become. With more than a decade free from addiction, I already knew something about starting over and the determination it takes to keep moving forward. This move gave me a chance to build on that progress, and my outlook is brighter than it has been in a long time.
Settling in took patience. It took about three months before I felt acclimated, and those early days were harder than I expected. I didn’t experience altitude sickness the way I had heard it described, but there were stretches when I stayed in bed all day, sometimes for as many as three days. I had arrived eager to begin a new chapter, only to find that I needed time and rest before I could fully enjoy it.
Even Margaret, my dog, had difficulty adjusting. We were both finding our footing in an unfamiliar place, learning new routines while getting used to our surroundings. Having her beside me mattered. Through the slow days and the small steps forward, we had each other as Colorado Springs gradually began to feel like home.
Today, I can run nearly three miles. When I first arrived, I could barely walk a few blocks. That difference means something to me every time I get outside. Progress can be difficult to recognize while it is happening, but remembering those first few months makes it clear how far I have come. There is real satisfaction in being able to do something that once felt so far beyond my reach.
I feel hopeful about what comes next. More than a decade free from addiction is a part of my life I am proud of, and leaving betrayal behind has opened space for greater peace. Colorado Springs is where I am giving myself permission to enjoy what I have worked so hard to reach. I am stronger, I am looking ahead, and I am excited to discover what this chapter holds.
